Growing up in Montana, my mother did something very special for Christmas each year. Blessed with a miraculous baking gene, she made gingerbread cookies. These weren't ordinary cookies, however.
She meticulously shaped and decorated (with icing) each cookie into the form of a father, mother, and a child. Once completed, dozens of the cookies were hung on our Christmas tree. (Hint: Bake the ornament hanger into the cookie itself...instant ornament!)
Yes, the cookies looked great; but, they tasted even better. They didn't stay on that tree for long either. Believe me, for many days before Christmas, cookie ornaments were disappearing from our tree at a rapid pace. I don't know who ate more...my dad, or myself. :)
Anyway, I tell you this story in the hopes that some of you out there will be inspired to create a similar Christmas tradition for your own family.
Now, I can't help you with the gingerbread recipe...I am going to leave that up to you. I can help you with a few cookie shape ideas, however.
To date, I have four gingerbread cookie designs available: a trout design, a royal coachman fly design, a cowboy boot, and a State of Montana design.
